BLESS N°63 Neutra Dasein

Curated by Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath

This summer the historic Neutra VDL Studio and Residences in Silver Lake will become the home of the Paris and Berlin-based design studio BLESS (Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag) in a project curated by Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath. Responding to the unique architectural environment of Richard Neutra’s Los Angeles home and work space, BLESS will bring their own contemporary design ethos to this icon of Californian mid-century modernism. Living and working separately in Paris and Berlin, this project will bring the two designers and their families together in the same place for the first time for an extended residency. In a project that will be equal parts installation, artist residency and model home for alternative ways of living, BLESS will transform the Neutra VDL House into a design laboratory and a site of conviviality.

CORNERSTONE by Les Frères Chapuisat

The Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP ARC) is pleased to host Swiss-based artists Les Frères Chapuisat to live and work at the Neutra VDL House to create their first installation in California. Installed in the courtyards of VDL, Richard Neutra’s architecture acts as host to a parasitic structure made up of thousands of board feet of pine planks.

This project is generously supported by Pro Helvetia, Swiss arts council; the Republic and Canton of Geneva; the City of Geneva; swissnex San Francisco; the Consulate General of Switzerland in Los Angeles and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States.

Les Frères Chapuisat constructions “transform space turning interior and exterior boundaries inside out and toying with the perception of a subjective reality. They demand visitors’ active participation, putting them into the position of being an explorer. These environments break down visual and intellectual habits, testing the explorers and obliging them to trust in their senses.”

Treatise: Why Write Alone? is a publication project by fourteen young design offices, organized by Jimenez Lai of Bureau Spectacular (Los Angeles/Chicago). Born out of Lai's Graham Foundation grant to pursue discursive and non-conformist approaches to architecture, Treatise is a prompt for Lai and his peers pursuing conceptual architectures: Why write? And given that, what write alone?

The collective of offices allied for an exhibition at the Graham Foundation in Chicago earlier this year, showcasing an individual treatise by each office.

Treatise's west coast launch party is co-hosted by Archinect, Neutra VDL House, and the Graham Foundation.

An Experimental Installation of Cold War Modern Design from East and West in One Context
at Neutra VDL Research House
July 13 - September 13, 2014

Visiting Hours:
Fridays: 6-9 PM
Sat/Sunday: 11 AM - 3 PM
Admission is $10.

Competing Utopias is a design collision that should never happen. But somehow, in Los Angeles, in 2014, twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it will.

This installation is a ‘mash-up’ in the most provocative sense of that word. Its force comes from the collision of two design cultures that have been kept apart but have been visually connected in ways yet unexamined. What we propose is an experimental installation that presents Cold War modern design from East and West in one context.

Xavier Veilhan Debuts
at Neutra VDL Research House
August 9 - September 15, 2012

The Neutra VDL Research House in Los Angeles is pleased to present Architectones, an installation by artist Xavier Veilhan. Veilhan has created a new body of work specifically for the Modernist house Richard Neutra designed for his family and architectural practice. Consisting of monochrome interventions, the exhibition features sculptures throughout the property, from the front garden through the ground floor and domestic quarters to the rooftop reflecting pool. Statues, models, and other objects dialogue with the Modernist structure: its glass facades, rooftops, water basins and fountains. Both abstract and figurative, the artworks loosely trace the decades of the last century by focusing on the personal and professional history of architect Richard Neutra, his times, and Veilhan and his family's interaction with the house. The installation will also feature a soundtrack composed by Nicolas Godin of the band Air.

Sarah Lorenzen resuming duties as Resident Director
We would like to thank Robert Alexander for taking over as Interim Director during Sarah's sabbatical. From now on, all communications about the house will be handled by Sarah Lorenzen.
Collaboration Between Neutra VDL and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi)
This project will open up Dutch / American dialog about the preservation of Modern buildings from the perspective of two very different cultures, histories, and institutions. The catalysts for discussion will be the Sonneveld House (1933) by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt and the VDL Studio and Residences (1932-1965) by Richard Neutra. There will be two principal events: one in Los Angeles and one in Rotterdam. These two conferences will be supplemented by online discussions, publications, and webcasts of the events on the VDL and NAi websites. These two conferences are supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation.
Roof Repairs
Award winning firm MARMOL RADZINER has volunteered pro-bono architectural services to help Cal Poly Pomona's College of Environmental Design with the Neutra VDL Roof repairs. Restoration of two of the house's smaller roofs is now complete. The Phase II roof restoration project will begin in late September 2012. This project will address the building's water infiltration problems and will bring back VDL's iconic rooftop reflecting pool. Work will include installing a new roofing system, adding new drains and an overflow system, replacing windows, and repairing interior sills and flashing, waterproofing walls, and replacing decks and planters.

This restoration project is made possible by a grant from the Friends of Heritage Preservation, Friends of VDL, Marmol Radziner, and other individual donors. In addition, Xavier Veilhan will donate proceeds from the sale of a sculpture from the exhibition to support the building's restoration. To contribute to the capital campaign for restoration please contact Resident Director Sarah Lorenzen, RA (
